2009 Scholarship Winners
Ermin Cruz, Baritone, a native of the Philippines, is now studying music at Santa Monica Community College. He studies voice privately with Rhona Klinghofer. Ermin has been a chorus singer for the Los Angeles Opera and Opera Pacific. He plans a career as a solo artist.
Johnell Holbert, Pianist, is a resident of Carson and studies at El Camino College, where his piano teacher is Deborah Aitken. He has previously attended the Colburn School of Performing Arts in Los Angeles, and he has won more than twenty piano competitions throughout the U.S. When he finishes his education, he plans to teach music at a conservatory.
Hector Hsu, Flute, a graduate of Palos Verdes High School and a current resident of San Pedro, is enrolled at Marymount College. He studies flute with Verna Balch. He has considerable experience playing in concert and marching bands and small ensembles. He has done a concert tour in China, and aspires to a career as a solo concert artist.
Yilin Hsu, Soprano, a resident of El Segundo, studies at El Camino College, where her voice teacher is Vicki Muto. She has performed in community musical theater, and competed in three long-term singing contests. She has been inspired by participating in the Opera Workshop at El Camino, and plans a performing career in opera and musical theater.
